General Summary:

The primary purpose of this position is to maintain, configure and repair inside plant equipment and software, complete service requests and respond to trouble tickets in a timely manner.

The normal hours for this position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with occasional after hours and weekend duty.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Maintains, configures, troubleshoots, repairs inside plant hardware, software and other associated equipment.
  • Ensures quality of service by monitoring and responding to operational measurements provided by the Softswitch switches and related equipment.
  • Ensures functionality on the Softswitch configurations and related hardware equipment by performing acceptance tests as appropriate and completes appropriate forms.
  • Responds to after hour emergency call out via rotating on call schedule.
  • Completes service requests and clears trouble tickets by assigned due dates.
  • Completes appropriate reports and records and forwards information to appropriate departments.
  • Promotes teamwork and a positive attitude.
  • Assists in the installation, service, and removal of inside plant facilities and equipment.
  • Updates records and performs general filing duties.
  • Commits to performing job tasks in a manner that ensures a safe work environment.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs other related duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must maintain a good driving record and a valid driver license.
  • Must, at minimum, meet the Certification and Training requirements of the Switching Technician III listed at the bottom of this opening.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of inside plant equipment, digital switching technology and A/C D/C power equipment.
  • Skill in installing, repairing and maintaining inside plant and switching equipment.
  • Ability to understand IP Network configurations and related software.
  • Ability to read and interpret various formats of English language instruction such as schematics, blueprints, and circuit diagrams; follow manufacturer's procedures, regulations and company's best practices.
  • Ability to evaluate, test, and repair sophisticated equipment.
  • Knowledge of company products/services, policies and procedures.
  • Good listening, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in operating a personal computer and software application pertaining to job function.
  • Skill in prioritizing, completing multiple tasks, identifying problems and finding resolutions.
  • Ability to communicate with customers, co-workers and various business contacts in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to work independently, analyze technical data and make sound decisions using information at hand.
  • Ability to adapt in a rapidly changing technical environment.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, perform under stress and achieve optimum results.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting or standing for extended periods, walking, finger dexterity, feeling, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity including close vision.
  • Occasionally may be required to lift up to 50lbs.
  • May be required occasionally to stoop, kneel or bend.
  • Ability to look at a computer screen for extended periods.
  • Ability to drive for extended periods.
  • Must be able to distinguish colors.
  • Must be able to climb and stand on a ladder for extended periods.

Switching Technician Certification and Training Requirements

Switching Technician III:

  • 0 to 1 year of experience in one or more of the following:
    • AC/DC Power & Installation
    • Telecom Power & Installation Battery/Cabling/ Grounding
    • Basic Electronics
    • Adtran, Calix and Vaonet Overview
    • C20/G6/C15& GVPP Fundamentals
    • (SBC & AS Integrated) Overviews
  • Must acquire Wireshark Training within 18 months.
  • Must acquire CompTIA Network+ certification within 18 months and maintain certification until a higher certification is acquired.

Switching Technician IV:

  • 2 years related experience and/or training
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in a network service provider environment.
  • SIP (SSCA) Certification - SIP, VoIP & Qos SIP security, Firewalls and SBC
  • SIP Trunking
  • CCT (Cisco Certified Technician)

Switching Technician V:

  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in three or more of the following:
    • GVPP 15,20 & CIM
    • SBC10,15, AS12/21, STS16 & G616
  • Must acquire or possess a current MEF-CECP certification and maintain said certification.
  • Cisco CCENT/Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician.
