General Summary:
Performs a variety of functions including designing and implementing networks to support Layer 2 and Layer 3 transport services for Pioneer's Carrier Ethernet, Corporate and Managed Services. Experience in the areas of Cisco routers and switches, IP, BGP, ISIS and MPLS protocols are preferred. The ideal candidate will also have experience in security administration and firewall/VPN setup.

The normal hours for this position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with occasional after hours and weekend duty.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Design and implement LAN, MAN and WAN networks.
  • Plan, configure, test, maintain troubleshoot, and tune Pioneer's Regional and metro Ethernet systems, Corporate and Managed Services networks and associated equipment to ensure their performance and integrity.
  • Monitors network and system activity, performance and reporting; applies troubleshooting skills to resolve problems as needed and reports issues that need to be elevated to the Lead Technician, Network Administrator or Department Manager.
  • Responds to hardware, software and other network related failures and engages appropriate vendor and Pioneer support in a timely manner to ensure quick and effective repair of services and equipment.
  • Researches new projects, equipment features, methods to improve customer service and overall department efficiency.
  • Provides excellent customer service, training, and support to internal and external customers for hardware and software networking equipment including installations, upgrades and troubleshooting technical issues.
  • Schedule and administer data back-ups of routers, switches, firewalls and other networking equipment.
  • Responds to after hour's emergency calls via rotating on call schedule including weekends.
  • Must be willing and able to work during normal maintenance window defined as      12:00 am to 6:00 am.
  • Completes appropriate reports and records and forwards information to appropriate departments or personnel.
  • Prepare bids for managed services and/or networking equipment.
  • Maintains vehicle, test equipment.
  • Commits to maintaining a work environment that encourages positive employee relationships within the division and other departments to establish a climate of openness and trust.
  • Exemplifies dependability standards through adherence to timelines and schedules. Commits to performing job tasks in a manner that ensures a safe work environment.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs other related duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications:
       • College student finishing Junior or Senior year majoring in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Management or related field
       • Must maintain a good driving record and a valid driver license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic telecommunications and networking.
  • Knowledge of Carrier Ethernet Services.
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP protocols.
  • Skilled in network routing protocols troubleshooting in BGP, ISIS, and MPLS.
  • Experience in network engineering and design with a service provider or internet-based business.
  • Operational experience with enterprise/carrier-class routers and switches.
  • Knowledge of Routing, Switching, IP and various other Protocols.
  • Knowledge of networking principles, systems administration, and security protocols and procedures.
  • General knowledge of firewall systems, and content filtering systems.
  • Skill in analytical thinking, problem solving and resolution.
  • Skill in using mechanical and electrical power tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as schematics, blueprints and circuit diagrams and follow manufacturer's procedures, regulations and company's best practices.
  • Ability to evaluate, test, and repair equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and work on multiple projects.
  • Ability to adapt in a rapidly changing technical environment.
  • Knowledge of company products/services, policies and procedures.
  • Skill in operating various PC software programs and office equipment such as, printer, copier, faxes and telephone systems.
  • Ability to communicate with customers, co-workers and various business contacts in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, perform under stress and achieve optimum results.
  • Ability to effectively function as a team player and to project a positive attitude.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality guidelines in accordance with company policy.
  • Ability to demonstrate dependability through good attendance and adherence to timelines and schedules.
  • Able and willing to continue business skill development by attending training away from home for an extended time frame.
  • Able and willing to be on call and work during the maintenance window

Physical Requirements: 
      • Sitting or standing for extended periods, walking, finger dexterity, feeling, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity including close vision.
      • May be required occasionally to stoop, kneel or bend and lift up to 50 lbs. 
      • Must be able to climb, stand on a ladder, and be in confined spaces for extended periods.
      • Must be able to crawl in attics and confined areas.
      • Ability to drive for extended periods. 
      • Must be able to distinguish colors.
      • Ability to work outside in all types of weather.
